Every company has to perform demanding audits these days. Financial audits, GDPR audits, enviromental audits and so on and so forth. Thanks to the word audit, many of us often get colds. Somehow we got used to the fact that mentions of the audit are related to not entirely positive things. But it doesn’t always have to be that way. An audit can also be beneficial for the company. That’s why we’ve decided to explain to you what auditing means in the field we know best – Occupational Safety and Health.

OSH audit – what is it all about?

As at the beginning of any new cooperation, it is necessary to agree on a specific procedure. It doesn’t matter where you do business. We provide our services throughout Europe.

After receiving a price offer, agreement and signing a contract for the provision of services, a professional OSH audit comes into play, where the actual state of health and safety in your company is evaluated. It is a practical evaluation of safety and health protection at your workplace, which is performed by a safety technician.

An integral part of the audit is the inspection of the workplace, it also includes:

  • control of safety marking of premises (marking of stairs, lowered ceilings, marking of hazardous workplaces, marking of electrical equipment and controls),
  • check of safety marking of machines and equipment (all safety fuses, dampers as well as STOP buttons / emergency buttons),
  • location of machines for safe work,
  • assessment of all risks in the workplace (the most common risks include: electric shock, injuries due to collision with a sharp object, falls, reduced visibility in the workplace, scalding, poor condition of external and internal roads, manual handling of loads, improper use of ladders and racks),
  • allocation and subsequent use of personal protective equipment (hereinafter PPE),
  • ensuring a drinking regime at the workplace,
  • observance of prohibited work in the workplace,
  • workplace equipment (changing rooms, toilets, washrooms),
  • first aid kits at workplace.

 

The initial inspection of workplaces will often tell our experienced auditors where the biggest risks lie and what can be improved immediately with regard to work safety. At this point, try to look around and answer the question – Is everything really safe in our workplace? Can nothing happen to any of the employees at work? We know from experience that if you have been in the workplace for a few weeks or months, as a result of the stereotypes at work, the risks in the field of OSH will be overlooked.

We have done a inspection, what next?

The inspection is behind us and the next part is when we get things moving quickly to improve safety. There is no cause for concern in this section, quite the contrary. Based on the information obtained, we will jointly agree on the next step in increasing security in your company.

In case of deficiencies, such as missing safety signs or training in terms of OSH, we will immediately ensure the replenishment as well as the marking of the premises themselves. In the event of other risks already mentioned above, together with you, we will develop safe working procedures that will be tailored just for your company.

We will also look at the location of the workplace. We dispel the myth that “nothing can happen to us in the office, because it is not a construction site.” The office is definitely not a construction site, which is why we will apply safety requirements for administrative work to it and we will apply requirements for it at the construction site.

An integral part of the OSH audit is also the OSH documentation, which includes guidelines for the provision of FP, guidelines for the procedure for performing controls on alcohol and other psychotropic substances, the procedure for accidents at work, risk analysis of individual workplaces, trauma plan and many other documents. Another question is right now: Does my documentation contain all the necessary documents? In the worst case, the question is: Should we have any OSH documentation?

Within the documentation, its elaboration, management, regular updating on the basis of constantly changing legislation as well as constantly changing working conditions and especially its application at the workplace are extremely important. The real introduction of occupational health and safety documentation into the common practice of you, your employees and thus your company, which will prevent even one dangerous event, minor injury or accident … was important.
