What having OSH in place means
OSH is not just training. Act No. 124/2006 Coll. imposes a set of obligations on the employer that must be met continuously and demonstrated during an inspection:
- Risk assessment for all activities, updated with every change of workplace, technology or procedure.
- OSH documentation: internal regulations, safe working procedures, a list of work prohibited for pregnant women and young people.
- Personal protective equipment (PPE): a list based on the risk assessment and records of issue.
- Briefing employees when they start and at regular intervals, with a knowledge check.
- Regular workplace inspections and checks of tests, ladders and racking.
- Work accidents: an internal procedure, records and reporting within statutory deadlines.
- First aid and evacuation: a written procedure and trained employees.

Frequently asked questions about OSH
Does a company with only one employee need OSH?
Yes. Every employer with at least one person on staff, including those working under agreements outside an employment contract, must have a safety technical service, a risk assessment, employee briefings and an occupational health service. These obligations arise from Act No. 124/2006 Coll. on OSH.
Can the managing director handle OSH personally?
Yes, if they are professionally qualified and the company has fewer than 19 employees (fewer than 5 for activities listed in Annex 1 of Act No. 124/2006 Coll.). In other cases you need an in-house safety technician or a contract with an authorised company such as HASPO.
How often is OSH training carried out?
The employer sets the interval in an internal regulation, but at least once every three years. Employees must also be briefed when they start, are transferred, change their work or when new technology is introduced. More on the OSH training page.
What OSH documents must a company have?
The basics are a written risk assessment, a list of personal protective equipment, an internal regulation on briefing employees, first aid and evacuation procedures, lists of work prohibited for pregnant women and young people, and an accident register. Companies with 11 or more employees in sectors listed in Annex 1 of the Act also need an OSH policy. An overview is available in our article Employer's obligations checklist (in Slovak).
Who inspects OSH and what fines can be imposed?
Compliance with OSH is checked by the Labour Inspectorate. It can impose a fine of up to €100,000 for breaches of the regulations, and if a breach caused a work accident resulting in serious injury or death, at least €20,000 or €33,000 respectively. A serious breach can lead to a fine of €1,000 to €200,000 (Section 19 of Act No. 125/2006 Coll.).
How much does an external safety technician cost?
