Fire extinguisher inspection: how often, procedure and price

Decree No. 347/2022 Coll. requires fire extinguishers to be inspected at least once every 24 months. However, almost all reputable manufacturers specify an inspection every 12 months in their instructions, in which case the manufacturer's interval applies. We carry out inspections and pressure tests at our sites in Košice, Bratislava and Vranov nad Topľou, and directly on your premises for contract clients and larger numbers of extinguishers. Under Sections 7 and 9 of Decree of the Ministry of the Interior No. 347/2022 Coll., which replaced Decree No. 719/2002 Coll. on 1 January 2023. If the manufacturer specifies a shorter interval in the instructions, that interval applies.

In practice once a year: the decree sets at least 24 months, but almost all reputable manufacturers specify an inspection every 12 months. That is why most fire extinguishers are inspected every year. You will find the interval in the extinguisher's instructions for use.

What the inspection includes

  • visual assessment of the pressure vessel and check of completeness
  • pressure measurement with a test gauge, weight check for CO2 extinguishers
  • check of the hose and nozzle: integrity and clear passage
  • fixing of the bracket and mounting of the extinguisher
  • seal, inspection label and inspection certificate
  • check of the validity of the pressure test

Under Annex 7 of Decree No. 347/2022 Coll. The scope varies by type of extinguisher.

When an extinguisher is taken out of service

  • it cannot be repaired using the procedure specified by the manufacturer
  • its serial number and the year of manufacture of the pressure vessel cannot be determined
  • its manufacturer-specified service life has expired
  • its components failed the pressure test

An extinguisher taken out of service or used must be replaced without undue delay by an extinguisher with the same or higher fire rating. New extinguishers are on the Fire extinguishers page.

How the inspection works

  1. List of extinguishers. Number, type, manufacturer, year of manufacture and date of the last inspection. A photo of the labels helps too.
  2. Price quote. We will prepare it promptly.
  3. Inspection. At our site in Košice or Vranov, or directly on your premises for contract clients and larger numbers of extinguishers.
  4. Labels, certificate and deadlines. Each extinguisher gets a label, you get a certificate, and we record the date of the next inspection according to the manufacturer's interval.

Frequently asked questions about fire extinguisher inspection

How often must a fire extinguisher be inspected?

Decree No. 347/2022 Coll. (Section 9) requires a portable fire extinguisher to be inspected at least once every 24 months and a mobile CO2 extinguisher once every 12 months. If the manufacturer specifies a shorter interval in the instructions, the manufacturer's interval applies, and almost all reputable manufacturers specify an inspection every 12 months. In practice, most fire extinguishers are therefore inspected every year.

Where can I find the inspection interval specified by the manufacturer?

In the instructions for use or the extinguisher's accompanying documentation. If you don't have them, we will check it for you by manufacturer and type when listing your extinguishers.

Is a fire extinguisher service the same as an inspection?

In practice people talk about a service (revízia), while the regulation uses the word inspection (kontrola). A pressure test is a different procedure: it checks the extinguisher's pressure vessel at intervals set by pressure equipment regulations and the manufacturer's instructions. Its validity is checked at every inspection.

Who can inspect fire extinguishers?

Only a natural person with a special authorisation issued by the manufacturer or its authorised representative for five years (Section 11c of Act No. 314/2001 Coll.).

What do I get after the inspection?

We attach an inspection label to each extinguisher and issue an inspection certificate. These serve as proof during fire authority inspections.
