Frequently asked questions about the OSH technician

Must every company have a safety technician?

Every employer must provide a safety technical service – through its own specialists in employment or through a contractor (Section 21(3) of Act No. 124/2006 Coll.). An employer with fewer than 19 employees (fewer than 5 for Annex 1 activities), or its statutory body, may also perform the tasks of the OSH technician personally if professionally qualified (Section 22(6) and (7) of Act No. 124/2006 Coll.).

Is an in-house technician or a contractor better?

By law, own professional employees are the basis, and an outsourced service is mandatory if the employer does not have enough of them (Section 21(3) and (4)). An external technician saves you payroll costs, and the contractor arranges cover for you. The minimum number of technicians is set out in Annex 1b of the Act – for example, in sectors listed in Annex 1, one technician for up to 400 employees.

What does a safety technician do?

They assess risks, prepare OSH documentation, train employees, carry out workplace inspections, take part in investigating the causes of work accidents and help during Labour Inspectorate inspections.

Does the authorised safety technician still exist?

No. Since 1 January 2023 an authorised safety technician has been regarded as a safety technician (Section 39k of Act No. 124/2006 Coll.). Certificates issued before this date expired on 1 January 2025 at the latest.
